On Saturday the 19th June, during the world cup, a team of English players lifted a prestigious footballing trophy in front of an appreciative crowd.
The final was a thriller with 9 goals being scored and not a single yellow card shown!
Forget Jules Rimet, this was the Julian Budd Kids in Sport annual 5 a side tournament and Jules would be proud of everyone, especially his old mates, defying the natural ageing process for the chance of glory.
Most of the players who took part that afternoon didn’t start moving normally again until a good few days later! But sore muscles aside, everyone thoroughly enjoyed either playing or spectating.
Over 50 players took part in this five a side competition at Handy Cross sports centre in Wycombe in an afternoon of fast paced, action packed drama which saw the Stray Cats get their mitts on the trophy, having overcome the Shreks in the final.
Shreks were last year’s winners who, having cruised through their games, seemed to run out of gas in the final.
All the players showed true determination, teamship and a spirit of fun. Football as it should be played. Some even showed skill.
Our thanks to all the players involved and to everyone who came along to show their support.
